Hybrid Karate and Tae-Kwon-Do Belt System-

Ages 12+

Stripes- Three different colors of stripes are awarded at Evolution Martial Arts.

Red Stripes-

Red stripes are given for competing in a martial arts tournament or competition (This includes anything from a traditional forms competition, to a full contact cage fight). Red stripes are kept until 3 are awarded. Once 3 red stripes are achieved they are exchanged for a blue stripe, and the student will start collecting them again.

Blue Stripes-

Blue stripes are awarded for placing first in a martial arts tournament or competition, or after 3 red stripes are achieved. Blue stripes are required for belt promotions. In order to promote to the rank of blue belt, at least one blue stripe must be achieved. Each belt beyond blue belt also requires at least one blue stripe. Blue stripes carry over from belt to belt, until the rank of blue belt is reached. At this point blue stripes must be collected again for each new belt. There is no limit to the amount of blue stripe that can be earned with each belt.

White Stripes-

White stripes are awarded as a step toward advancement to the next belt level. Each belt level has a certain number of stripes that must be obtained before advancement. The amount of stripes needed for advancement is the same as the minimum number of months needed to advance to the next belt. For example, a white belt can reach yellow belt in as little as 3 months, so a white belt needs 3 stripes in order to be qualified to test for yellow belt . A student must also attend a certain number of classes in order to receive a white stripe. This is determined by taking the minimum number of days needed to promote to the next belt, and dividing it by the minimum number of months needed to get to the next belt. For example to be allowed to test for a yellow belt, a white belt must take a minimum of 24 classes, and be a white belt for a minimum of 3 months before he/she is allowed to test. 24 divided by 3 is 8, so a student must attend a minimum of 8 classes in order to get their first stripe. Also, a student can only receive one stripe per month. Exceptions may be made if they missed the previous months stripe promotion week (and have a good reason why), or were just a day or two short the month before and make the days up before the next stripe promotion.

Stripe Testing- Stripe testing is held during the last week of each month. During this week each student practices and refines all the belt requirements for his/her current belt rank and all previous belt ranks. Class is run at an even more intense pace than normal, and is structured to be similar to an official belt promotion. Stripe testing week is not a pass fail event. If a student has enough days, has put in at least the minimum amount of time, and has shown solid improvement than he/she will receive a white stripe.

Belt Testing- Once a student has received the full amount of white and blue stripes required to advance to the next belt the instructors may permit him/her to test. Remember, the stripes are only half of it. The instructors must determine if you are ready to test based your skill level and ability to execute the required techniques properly , as well as other factors, such as your level of focus, dedication, character, and spirit. Belt testing is held on the first Monday of each month. Unlike stripe testing, belt testing is graded on a pass fail basis. The student is graded on exactly what is listed on the belt requirement sheets, so there will be no surprises. If a student passes, he/she is promoted to the next belt. If a student fails, he/she must wait until given permission to test again.
